Happy Thursday my pretty little zebras!

Today has been a bit unorthodox for me, which I love! Instead of primarily sitting at my desk typing away at my computer, I have been busy helping one of my fellow interns in the sample room. The sample room is filled to the brim with clothes and accessories, and the walls are lined with beautiful scarves of all shapes, colors, sizes and textures.

Our task for the afternoon was to organize the scarves onto boards, and line them up in accordance to color, length, fabrication and by how many scarves in that particular style we had in stock.

This was a fun challenge because it was extremely tangible and we were able to express our creativity.

Now, the room is miraculously organized, and all of the scarves are ready to be sent to the various showrooms Sterling Styles and Zazou will be participating in throughout the month of August.

We used skills learned from classes such as AMM 270 and 160 and AMM 160L, Textile Sciences, because we also organized the pieces by fabrication when necessary.

However, I am now back to my copywriting duties, typing away as I create content for this blog and the Zazou website. Earlier, I also completed some clerical work for the office.

Unbelievably so, it is my 10th day at the office, as I work to complete my internship for my Apparel Merchandising and Management major at Cal Poly Pomona. As mentioned before, once I complete this internship and the course associated with it, I will be able to apply for graduation and receive my diploma from college!

Getting back to accomplishments closer at hand, I will begin the morning by stating how excited I am that I have finally picked the day (today) to wear my zebra shirt! I have been wanting to wear this top on a Tuesday or Thursday so as to properly represent this Zazou blog, who, as we all know, is symbolized by a zebra!

Today is a self sufficient day, in which I will work on projects that were assigned to me last week, and some that were assigned even earlier. For example, each day I try to get through at least 100 descriptive blurbs on the Sterling Styles website. There are also more ad campaigns that can be accomplished for the New York show room in August, and the designs and information pertinent to both the Zazou and Sterling Styles sites must be fine tuned as well.

And of course, one of my favorite duties at this internship, is adding posts and content to this blog, while simultaneously raising awareness about https://www.zazou.com/z_index.php

I am still being helped by what I learned in classes such as AMM 230 and 270, in which descriptors and visual design were so important.

Thank you everybody for reading, and from all of us here at Zazou, have a fantastic day 😀

When speaking on the phone, one only has the tone, sound and volume of another person’s voice to listen to. That person on the other end is otherwise invisible. One cannot pick up on body language or other visual cues. It is his or her words and voice that give the caller an insight into this stranger on the other end of the line. Luckily, for Claudia Koch, her voice carries more personality than most people’s entire beings.

On the morning of the Fourth of July, I had the pleasure of interviewing Claudia over the phone. She is one of the original founders of the luxury scarf brand Zazou, the company that this blog centers upon.

Christopher Carroll and Claudia, who met at the University of California, Berkeley, began their Zazou business after Claudia had found success importing jewelry and scarves from other countries into the United States.

“After I graduated [from Berkeley] . . . I traveled extensively in Asia and I started buying silver jewelry and bringing it back and showing it here [the United States] in kind of a casual nature,” explained Claudia. “Finally, one of the items that I was bringing in were scarves that were made in India, these beautifully colored scarves, and they just took off.”

And took off they did, as both entrepreneurs used their own talents to expand the Zebra-clad business. Claudia focused on importing materials while Chris set his sights on designs. Together, the pair also hired a group of dedicated sales reps to help sell the products and create personal relationships with the clients and customers.

“[Zazou] was a name that was known for its quirkiness, and a company that was known for its customer service,” said Claudia with pride. “We did anything for our customers, anything.”

According to Claudia, in addition to customer service, the Zazou brand is also known for creating quality accessories for older, professional women who enjoy creative designs.

“The Zazou brand, it has a quirky aspect,” said Claudia. This “quirky” aspect, she said, was heavily prevalent in the line when she and Chris ran the company. Last year, however, the duo sold the brand to Sterling Styles, where it thrives today. Claudia and Chris still maintain a connection to Zazou, and offer their input whenever they can. And their advice is always welcomed, seeing as the former schoolmates ran the company for approximately 30 years.

“The fashion industry is a lot of work,” cautioned the fashion veteran. “It is a very hard, hard way to make a living. A lot of it has to do with luck. I believe in luck and being in the right place at the right time.”

Now, for Claudia, the right moments come from traveling with her husband or when buying pieces that exemplify her self-proclaimed “quirky” style.

“My own personal style is very quirky, shall we say, and probably younger than it should be,” Claudia said with an exuberant laugh. “And my husband keeps telling me, ‘Claudia, you are not 30 years old anymore!’”

This is what has made Claudia such an innovator and a successful businesswoman. She has made and followed her own set of rules and guidelines all of her life.

“If you look at people who are successful in fashion, they are all kind of eccentric, I think,” opinioned Claudia. “Eccentrics have good business sense, let’s put it that way!”

According to Christopher Carroll, the emblem, if you will, for Zazou was chosen to be a Zebra, so as to continue with the ‘Z’ theme.

Zazou logo

Thirty years ago this decision was made, yet, one day ago, an article was trending on Yahoo, in which it was stated that Scalamandre Zebra Wallpaper was making a comeback! This makes sense, seeing as the color combination of black and white has always been a staple.

Happy Thursday my Zazou Zebras!

Yesterday flew by, and now I am back here in Walnut working on assignments for Sterling Styles and Zazou (https://www.zazou.com/z_index.php)

In terms of the blog, I want to focus on giving you more looks from the Fall 2013 photo shoot. Now, should I do this before or after I eat my nutritious lunch?!

Yes, while I am diligent when it comes to my work here, I have absolutely no regiment when it comes to my diet, hence the summer weight gain, hence my current distaste for swim wear!!

Anyway, what is nice about scarves is they fit you no matter what your waist size! You can even throw on a long, billowy scarf that covers you up in case you are feeling modest (or full of pop tarts).

Today I STILL need to transcribe my Claudia Koch interview, work on more online campaigns for future show room events in locations such as New York and Las Vegas and make an excel spreadsheet for Zazou inventory.

Work from my communication courses will again come in handy as I transcribe and write my Claudia profile piece. She talked to me about the business side of fashion and the chain of operations, facts I also learned about in classes such as AMM 250 and AMM 350, Apparel Merchandise Buying I and II.

Wish me luck ❤

Hello my little zebras!

So, I have decided that every once in a while I could fill you in on the life and times of a Sterling Styles and Zazou intern. If you have not read about me yet in the ‘About the Blogger’ tab at the top of the page, I will give you a quick synopsis about myself right here and now.

My name is Micheala, I am 21 years old and I am a recent graduate of Cal Poly Pomona (Go Broncos!). I majored in Apparel Merchandising and Management and minored in Journalism. The thinking behind that  was I wanted to prepare myself for the world of fashion journalism!

Below is a selfie from today, my fourth day at my internship here in sunny Southern California (I know, the bangs need a trimmin’).

fourth day!

After snapping the selfie, I eagerly dialed the number of Christopher Carroll, the man behind the designs of Zazou scarfs. I wanted to interview Chris for this very blog.

We talked on the phone for nearly 25 minutes, during which he asked me questions about myself and I asked him about his career, inspirations and advice for those just starting out in the fashion industry.

It was so exciting to talk to someone who has actually made a name for himself in such a cutthroat industry, and even though I was a little nervous at first, Chris soon eased my tension with his sincerity and good natured attitude.

It was so wonderful to talk with someone who is so talented, yet so down to earth. Chris could not have been nicer during the phone interview, and he graciously added that if I ever need help or advice,  I could give him a call.

Thus far,  have utilized skills obtained from many of my Communication classes I took at Cal Poly Pomona. In my Reporting courses, we learned how to conduct interviews and set up articles. I also learned in AMM 245, Consumerism, Impact and Issues, because that class discussed customers and how they respond to products and ads. With this blog, I am attempting to communicate with consumers and appeal to their needs and interests. This use of social media also corresponds with AMM 230, Fashion Promotion, because I am constantly trying to promote the Zazou and Sterling Styles name.

It has been a great start to this Thursday so far – let’s hope this positivity continues!
